To improve his chances of winning, Charles Oliveira must do everything he can to avoid being in the parterre with Islam Makhachev, believes the Russian’s former opponent and current UFC featherweight champion, Alexander Volkanovski.
“If we’re talking about whose grappling is more effective in the MMA world, I’m sure it’s Islam,” the Australian said in a video posted on his Youtube channel. “He reads the position perfectly, understands the mechanics of movement, and knows in advance what his opponent is going to do. He’s literally one step ahead and he’s very difficult to sabmize. As soon as you try to get into the position you want, he stops it immediately.”
“Oliveira’s jiu-jitsu is very effective, when he has open space he will catch you instantly, but against Islam it’s very difficult to find that space. Islam is very good at control, he deprives his opponent of the ability to move, so it will be difficult for Charles to find the opportunity to use his skills in the parterre.”
“Charles has to focus on defense against the kickdowns and stay on his feet, because lying on his back he won’t be able to surprise Islam, who has been in that position a million times. It’s a tough fight for Charles and he needs by all means to take it to the stand-up where his chances of winning increase”
