Usman Nurmagomedov’s fate in Bellator is decided

Current Bellator lightweight titleholder Usman Nurmagomedov, who was disqualified for six months for using banned substances, will retain his championship belt.

In an interview TASS reported the Russian’s manager, Rizvan Magomedov.

“Usman remained the champion,” Magomedov stated. “It will be clear on his next fight closer to the end of his disqualification. For now, there is no clarity.”

Last November, the head of the California State Athletic Commission, Andy Foster, announced that Usman Nurmagomedov had failed doping tests and was disqualified for six months, and his fight with Brent Primus, headlining the Bellator 300 event in San Diego on October 7, was ruled a no contest.

The Russian in a published statement acknowledged the presence of a banned substance in his system, explaining that it was part of a medication prescribed to him by his doctor. At the same time, Nurmagomedov did not have a therapeutic authorization to use the drug, as he did not notify the Athletic Commission.

By defeating Primus, Usman Nurmagomedov advanced to the Bellator lightweight grand prix finals where he was scheduled to face his compatriot Alexander Shabliy, however, due to the canceled result of the title match and the champion’s disqualification, the final match of the contest is in question.

At the moment, 25-year-old Usman Nurmagomedov continues to be ranked as the third best Bellator fighter regardless of weight class.
