UFC champion Leon Edwards called himself Leon Magomedov

Reigning UFC welterweight champion Leon Edwards, who successfully defended his title this past weekend against Colby Covington, believes fans and pundits are grossly underestimating his wrestling skills by writing him off as a basic puncher.

“I started straight from mixed martial arts, I didn’t come from kickboxing, but for some reason they put me down as a striker,” the Brit told TNT Sports. “I was able to transfer Kamaru Usman, who had never been transferred before in his career, so I did it with two of the best fighters in the division.”

“I fought them, I transferred them, and I showed that I’m going to grow as an athlete and as a mixed martial artist as long as I reign. I can shave off my mustache, grow a beard, and there you have Leon Magomedov.”

The welterweight title fight headlined the UFC 296 event in Las Vegas went the full distance and ended with the reigning champion winning a 49-46 three-round unanimous decision.

The best fighter in the organization regardless of weight class, Islam Makhachev, who holds the UFC lightweight title, as well as top welterweights Belal Muhammad and Shavkat Rakhmonov, have already announced their desire to fight the Briton.
