Gilbert Burns was able to show the world with his UFC 283. fight.
After months of waiting to be back in action, Burns decided that he had to stand out against Neil Magny. It ultimately only took a single takedown for Burns to advance his position, lock on a nasty head-and-arm choke and it forced Magny to tap out at 4:15 in the opening round.
“This is Brazil. Burns shouted, “There is no other route,” after his victory. “For everyone running away from me, I’m coming. “I’m the champion.” They aren’t at my level .”
When the fight began, Burns quickly got in Magny’s reach to grab the body lock and bring down the fight to the ground.
From there, Burns was methodical with his grappling attacks as he looked to pass through Magny’s defense and set himself up for a potential submission or a spot where he could unleash some ground and pound.
Burns finally moved into side control, then to the mount. Magny remained defensive as he applied pressure from the top. Burns could have thrown a few more punches but he chose to show his grappling prowess by quickly grabbing onto the head-and arm choke and jumping to the side in order to lock down the submission.
Magny realized he was not breaking free after a few seconds. That’s when Magny tapped to end the fight.
After sitting in the stands since April 2022, when he was engaged in back-and forth war with Khamzat Chimiaev, Burns’ dominant performance was just what he wanted. With this win, Burns is now targeting a fellow former title challenger as his next opponent.
“I want to be back very quick and I’m going to finish everybody,” Burns said. “Colby Covington! I’m here !”
