Trial of former UFC champion Cain Velasquez scheduled for August

Lawyers for former UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez, who is accused of attempted murder, managed to get the trial postponed to August this year.

The corresponding decision was made last Wednesday by Judge Panteha Saban, who granted the request of lawyer Rene Hessling, representing the American fighter.

The 40-year-old retired heavyweight has faced multiple charges after he staged a shooting chase in February last year while chasing the car of one Harry Gularte, accused of molesting Velasquez’s son. The former UFC champion chased the car, firing a .40 caliber pistol, and ended up hitting his stepfather Gularte, who was shot in the arm.

Cain Velasquez was later arrested and held for the next eight months until Judge Artur Bocanegra released him on $1 million bail. At the same time, the fighter was allowed to perform at wrestling tournaments, as well as participate in charity events.

If the former UFC heavyweight title holder is found guilty of the charges, he could spend the rest of his life in jail.
