Tom Aspinall: “I’m the best heavyweight in MMA.”

UFC interim heavyweight champion Tom Aspinall believes the world’s strongest league should scrap the idea of a title fight between Jon Jones and Stipe Miocic and instead let him compete against the former division champion.

“I’m not trying to pull a blanket on myself, but facts are stubborn things,” the Brit said on another edition of The MMA Hour program. “Jon Jones is inactive right now. Francis Ngannou is inactive in MMA. I am the best heavyweight in mixed martial arts right now.”

“The Jones vs. Miocic fight was awesome, but I don’t want to see it and I don’t think anyone wants to see it a year from now. Let’s move away from that and let me fight one of the legends and beat a legend.”

“I know Stipe is obsessed with beating Jones, but right now I’m the champion. I can easily pack a stadium in the UK and I think it’s a great idea. I’ve had a taste of greatness and I want that to continue. I want to become the best heavyweight to ever step into the octagon. I’ve just turned 30 years old, and I’m quite capable of doing that.”

On Nov. 11 at UFC 295 in New York, Tom Aspinall won the interim UFC heavyweight championship belt with a 69-second knockout of Russian Sergey Pavlovich, while two weeks prior, the division’s reigning champion, Jon Jones, tore a pectoral muscle and pulled out of his bout against Stipe Miocic.
