Tom Aspinall demands Jon Jones be stripped of his UFC title

Tom Aspinall, who won the interim UFC heavyweight championship belt against Sergey Pavlovic, believes the organization should strip Jon Jones of the current title and declare him the full champion of the division.

“Honestly, I think Jon Jones should be stripped of the title because that’s what everyone else does when they get injuries like that,” the Brit said in an interview with Michael Bisping. “I don’t understand why he still has the championship belt. I think I should be the real champion now.”

“It’s hard to say this without sounding rude, but who wants a Jon Jones and Stipe fight? Why do we need that legacy fight if they’re both retiring? I want to fight Stipe and then I want to fight Jon Jones. All the other options are bullshit. Stop defending Jon Jones! Stop protecting your boy at the top. If he’s injured, let him get out of the way and I’ll fight Stipe.”

“The Jones and Stipe fight is forgotten, nobody wants it. You have a new champion at this weight – me. You have Stipe, who will have had one fight in four years by the time Jones comes back, and he’s already 42 years old. He was knocked out in his previous fight and he’ll be fighting Jones, who will be coming back from a serious injury and has had one fight in three years”

“Again, who needs this fight after all these years? Let’s move on. I’m the champion now. I’m going to fight Stipe, he’s available. We’ll fight Stipe, and after I beat him, I’ll fight Jon Jones.”

According to the UFC’s plan, Jon Jones, who tore a pectoral muscle, will return in no less than eight months and fight Stipe Miocic, while Tom Aspinall will wait to fight the winner of that confrontation. The Brit has no guarantee that the reigning champion will fight him, as both Americans could end their careers after the title fight.
