The former unified champion in the second bantamweight (up to 55.3 kg) and the current No. 1 in the featherweight (up to 57.2 kg) WBC rating American Brandon “Heartbreaker” Figueroa (23-1-1, 18 KOs) naughty last Sunday and fell into the hands of cops – drove a vehicle while intoxicated.
The incident took place in the hometown of the ex-champion Veslako (Texas, USA). According to a police report, the athlete’s blood alcohol level exceeded the legal limit (in the state of Texas) by almost twice.
The fighter was released after paying 1,000 USD bail. Apparently, this is a family thing for Figueroa – the older brother Omar Figueroa was caught by the cops at least three times when he was driving a drunk car.
The date of the court hearing in this case is still unknown, but theoretically the incident could greatly hinder the career of a fighter.
Earlier it became known that the Mexican WBC featherweight champion Vargas is going to conquer the third weight division. This means that it is almost certain that Figueroa will be offered a fight for the vacant belt.
Another decision from the WBC. The champion of the organization in the flyweight (up to 50.8 kg) Mexican Julio Cesar Martinez (18-1, 14 KOs) will hold the next fight not in October, as previously expected, but on December 3 at Desert Diamond Arena (Glendale, Arizona, USA).
The fight will be held as a warm-up for the legends of the second flyweight, Mexican Juan Francisco Estrada and Nicaraguan Roman Gonzalez – they will have a third fight, so far the score in their head-to-head confrontations is a draw.
Martinez’s opponent is his mandatory challenger and WBC interim title holder Puerto Rican Macullams Arroyo (21-4, 16 KOs). They already fought in 2021, but the winner was not determined – due to a cut, the fight had to be stopped, both fell.
Interestingly, the WBC is sanctioning this fight for the fifth time in the last 2.5 years. The fight fell through three times – each time because of Martinez (twice a week before the fight). The organization is famous for its super-loyal attitude towards the Mexicans – the title was never taken away from Martinez.
In March 2022, he fought Gonzalez in the second flyweight limit. It’s funny that the Mexican managed to fail the weigh-in. Experts and fans do not believe much that Martinez is able to make the 50.8 kg limit again.
Earlier it was rumored that Dalakyan’s weight champions agreed on unification, a tough warm-up fight. It is interesting that the Ukrainian is accused of allegedly rejecting unification, though not with Martinez.
