The World Boxing Council (WBC) championship belt, which the legendary Muhammad Ali was awarded for his victory in the famous fight over George Foreman, called the Rumble in the Jungle, was sold at auction yesterday for $6.18 million.

Described by Heritage Auctions as “perhaps the most important boxing trophy ever put up for public auction,” the new owner of the relic, which was described by Heritage Auctions as “arguably the most important boxing award ever put up for public auction,” was Jim Irsay, owner of the NFL’s Indianapolis Colts.

The organizers claim that this belt is one of two known WBC belts owned by Ali. The other is kept in a private museum and is not supposed to be sold.

The Ali-Foreman fight for the WBC and WBA heavyweight titles took place on October 30, 1974 in Kinshasa (Zaire) and ended with Muhammad’s victory by knockout in the 8th round.
