The court sentenced Jorge Masvidal

A year and a half after assaulting his former best friend Colby Covington, Jorge Masvidal pleaded guilty to battery as part of a plea agreement and the dismissal of two other criminal charges.

The former UFC welterweight title challenger was sentenced to formally serve time that was extinguished by his previous appearances at the police station and court hearings, as well as court costs. A prosecution representative who attended the final court hearing said Covington was given the opportunity to appear in court but declined it.

Masvidal attacked Covington in March 2022, just weeks after he lost to him by unanimous decision at UFC 272 in Las Vegas. The attack left Covington with injuries including broken teeth and a concussion.

On the charges, Jorge Masvidal faced 15 years in prison, as well as a ten thousand dollar fine. From the time of his arrest until his formal guilty plea, Masvidal insisted on his innocence.

In April of this year, 38-year-old Jorge Masvidal suffered his fourth consecutive defeat, losing a three-round unanimous decision to Gilbert Burns, after which he announced the end of his professional career.

Colby Covington, 35, will return to the octagon on Dec. 16 at UFC 296 in Las Vegas to try to take the UFC welterweight championship belt from Britain’s Leon Edwards.
