This coming Saturday in Carson (California, USA) the owner of the vacant WBC super lightweight belt will be determined – the top representatives of the division Americans Regis Prograis (27-1, 23 KOs) and Jose Cepeda (35-2, 27 KOs) will meet in a head-to-head confrontation.

Former undisputed champion in the lower division American Teofimo Lopez (17-1, 13 KOs)
decided with the favorite: “I think it’s Prgrace. But don’t write off Cepeda. Remember what a comeback he made in a fight with Ivan Baranchik. I bet on Prograis, as he is better adapted to the division. He’s been playing longer (in fact, this is not so – approx. vRINGe). Well, both are left-handers. And that means both will need time to adapt.”
According to Lopez, “You feel like the fighters respect each other. And there is nothing surprising in this. They are both with a punch, both prefer to look for happiness in the attack. Great fight. Especially when you consider that the WBC belt is at stake. And yes, I’m aiming for the winner of the fight, because I’m interested in everyone in this division who has a title. The whole coolness of my position is that I don’t have to stand in line – we can organize a voluntary defense. I understand that there are all sorts of rules and all that. But, as far as I understand, the champion has the right to decide who he fights.”
In fact, Lopez is not very right about this either. Firstly, Prograis, and even more so Cepedu, can hardly be called fighters of a purely attacking plan. Secondly, the winner of the fight must first meet with ex-champion Jose Ramirez, and only then will the turn reach him, and also in the status of a mandatory contender – in the WBC eliminator, Lopez will fight Spaniard Sandor Martin.
“As for me, we need to give more freedom to the champions. After all, they know better with whom the fight will turn out brighter and a victory over whom will help replenish the fan base. You know… I thought that the one who is better prepared for the fight will win this battle. The one who has a better training camp. Who sparringers were brighter. Who steeper dominated them in the ring. Who was more efficient. These are the moments that will determine the winner, ”said Lopez.
And a little earlier, Prograis shared his opinion about the duel Teofimo Lopez vs. Sandor Martin. Father/coach Teofimo Lopez Sr claims his son will take another “absolute” before the end of 2024.
