Very soon, big changes will take place in the welterweight (up to 66.7 kg), which will be provoked by the transition of the current WBC / WBA / IBF world champion title holder American Errol Spence (28-0, 22 KOs) to the next category up to 69.9 kg.
This forecast was made by Cameron Dunkin, the promoter of the “interim” IBF champion Jaron Ennis (30-0, 27 KOs). He does not believe that Spence will fulfill his obligations and will fight with his ward. Moreover, Keith Thurman is called Errol’s most likely next opponent.
“Jaron is now the interim champion and Spence has to fight him within 90 days,” says Dunkin, “so we will fight for the title one way or another. The question is whether Spence wants to fight. The answer is no, he will vacate the title and go to 69.9 kg, and Ennis will become a full-fledged champion and probably make his first defense in June.
“69.9 kg is perfect for Spence,” says the promoter. I think they will make a big fight between Spence and (undisputed champion) Jermell Charlo. Yes, even though they have the same coach (Derrick James). This is such a strange business. But Spence no longer wants to cut the weight to 66.7 kg.”
A month ago, an authoritative opinion appeared that Ennis would now beat Crawford, but would lose to Spence.
