Unified American Pound Welterweight Champion Errol Spence (28-0, 22 KOs) invites ex-WBA Interim Lightweight Champion compatriot Rolando Romero (14-1, 12 KOs) to face off against US prospect Frank Martin (16-0) , 12 KOs).
Both Romero and Martin have previously met with Dominican Jackson Marines: in 2020, the judges gave Rolando a controversial decision victory (and with it a semi-title), and at the weekend Frank won ahead of schedule in the decisive round.
It seems that this result
convinced Spence in that the “teammate” in coach Jerrick James Martin is much stronger than Romero: “He brightly timed Marines, unlike Romero. So I have no doubt that Frank will beat him. Romero is known for losing by knockout (in a fight for the WBA World title) to Gervonta Davis. But it is unlikely that you will name at least some of his significant victories, because he does not have them. Yes, I think Frank is ready for the Rollie. And even after the defeat, he needs an opponent for a comeback. Therefore, I don’t see any problems with organizing a face-to-face fight for them.”
Spence still fails to mention that the Martin vs. Marines fight turned out to be much more competitive than anticipated, nor that the Dominican took the fight on short notice.
Coach James is confident that Martin has reached a stage in his career where “no one is particularly eager to fight him, as this is an unjustified huge risk. But if Frank continues to move in this direction, then I am sure that in a year or two they will all line up to fight him. They forget that by that time Martin himself will be different – much more perfect.
Interestingly, Gervonta Davis in the fight with Rolando Romero updated his PPV sales record. The loser declared the winner first: I drove that scared shitless bitch and took all the rounds. But then he let go a little: “I respect “Tank” Davis, I lost to a stronger one.”
