Having suffered a second defeat from the Ukrainian Oleksandr Usyk, the British ex-world heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua (24-3, 22 KOs) decided to refuse the services of the American coach Robert Garcia, with whom he worked for only one training cycle, and started looking for a new mentor.
While AJ was sorting through his options, unified welterweight champion American Errol Spence suggested that the Briton would work great with his trainer Derrick James.
“Yeah, they would make a great team,” Spence said. “I’m not saying that Derrick would have taken him to another level, but he would have helped him with both his defense and his attack too.”
“He would talk to him and give him the comfort he needs,” says Errol. “You need this comfort, especially if you want to improve your defense, let go of your hands, and maintain focus throughout the fight. Because it looks like he’s a little mentally broken. So Derrick will take him to the top if they work together.”
Meanwhile, Garcia admitted that he wants to continue coaching Joshua and also explained why any new Anthony coach would look good.
