Smith to insure Teixeira-Hill title fight

Former UFC light heavyweight title contender Anthony Smith will be the alternate in the vacant championship bout between Glover Teixeira and Jamal Hill, who will headline UFC 283 in Rio de Janeiro on January 21.

“Yes, I will fly to Rio and I will drive weight,” the American said in an interview with ESPN. “I don’t think the guys will get in trouble because they’re both pros, but if something happens, I’ll be there to come on as a substitute.”

Anthony Smith was scheduled to fight Jamal Hill in the main event of UFC Fight Night 221 on March 11 in Las Vegas, but was left without an opponent after his compatriot received an unscheduled title shot.

As you know, the organization’s first attempt to play for the vacant light heavyweight title ended unsuccessfully, as Magomed Ankalaev and Jan Blachowicz ended the fight in a draw, after which UFC President Dana White announced a championship fight between Teixera and Hill.
