UFC 280: Oliveira vs. Makhachev took place Oct. 22 at Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. Former UFC bantamweight champion Petr Yan (16-4) took on popular up-and-comer Sean O’Malley (16-1, 1 NC) in a featured bout on the night’s main card. It was broadcast live by ESPN+.

Round 1: O’Malley comes out in southpaw with Yan in orthodox and taking the center right away. These two look like they are in different weight classes.

Yan is already going to his legs two times and O’Malley has moved around on the outside. O’Malley launches a kick, and then a jab. Yan cuts the cage to counter O’Malley’s big kick, and O’Malley’s position switches.

O’Malley is thrown to the ground with a back left. Body kick from Yan. Low kick from O’Malley. A lot of stance switches coming from both men. Herzog warns both men to watch their fingers.

O’Malley scores a right-hand and front kick. Yan struggles with range but manages to land a body kick. He’s staying with pressure. O’Malley scores a left counter. O’Malley is using this length very well, but then he eats another leg kick.

Yan fires in the air when O’Malley reaches the fence. He is in the hips, but can’t get there. He’s now in a waistlock with O’Malley, who uses the fence to keep him up. O’Malley gives up and they fight hand to head.

Yan moves in front of O’Malley, but Yan is able to counter him big and push him away. Yan is now leading again. He’s landing. And lands a clean left hand. Yan has O’Malley back up to the fence quickly and Yan drops for another double-leg. This time, his hands lock and O’Malley is free for a ride.

Yan has O’Malley against the fence, he’s in guard and pressuring down. O’Malley trying to create with those long legs but no jot. Yan lands some shots but O’Malley gets up and fires a 1-2. O’Malley trying hard to make an impression. Yan does manage to land a great leg kick. He’s chopping that leg.

O’Malley fires combos at Yan’s guard, then O’Malley opens the gun and shoots. Yan twists, and O’Malley has Yan in a rear waistlock. Yan escapes the circle.

Round 2: That was a very competitive opening round. Yan is at this point where he usually turns it on. O’Malley proving that he’s still in his element. And his corner tells him as much.

Yan comes out firing to start the second, landing a big body kick.

Yan is beaten by O’Malley with his left hand! Yan has serious problems if Yan leaves Yan with too many left lands! He’s moving away.

YAN CRACKS OL’MALLEY WITH a MONSTER RIGHT HAN O’MALLEY ALMOST DROPS AND YAN IS ON HIM NOW! That was an enormous shot and Yan is in O’Malley’s guard and starting to hit him with shots. They might both be trying to get back on their feet.

Yan throws a big elbow. O’Malley searching for an armbar. Yan holds firm as he rolls over to stand. Yan kneels to O’Malley’s body. O’Malley is still in the waistlock. Yan holds the body against the fence. Yan holds the waist lock with O’Malley against the fence. Yan tries to turn out, but Yan keeps going and he’s searching for another takedown. Can’t get it though and we’re back at space.

Yan lands one of those sneaky little step in trips and pops O’Malley. O’Malley tries to do his own thing, but with no luck. Yan is still focusing on O’Malley at the moment and it’s putting pressure on the star youngster. O’Malley still looking for counters though.

Yan scores a powerful body kick to get O’Malley’s notice. Another one. His eyes are still in this but Yan is starting to build momentum. He’s certainly on the attack. Combo from Yan gets O’Malley to the fence and he’s on the hips again. He locks his hands and then he dumps O’Malley. Yan is covering Yan’s legs with his hands, trying to secure O’Malley in a better place.

Yan staying tall, lands a couple shots in there. O’Malley consents to spend the rest of this round on the mat and the horn sounds.

Round 3: Win, lose, or draw, O’Malley has exceeded most people’s expectations. He has shown great performance. He looks relaxed and prepared for the third. Yan seems more exhausted than Yan, which is a sign that man has cardio.

O’Malley is kicking the opponent with a body kick. He’s also leading the attack by flashing his jab. Yan swings a big counter. He is swinging so hard. Yan drops for a single but O’Malley fends it off.

This round O’Malley is really using the jab quite a bit, pop pop. He follows it with something meaningful and it could be big. Yan is now in the middle and getting his grooves on. Yan’s defense, however, is excellent despite O’Malley’s angles.

O’Malley is busy. Yan combines O’Malley at the fence, and shoots. But O’Malley’s too flexible to stay up and Yan is too busy.

O’Malley lands something that opens Yan up and he’s bleeding and now O’Malley is on the attack! O’Malley is smelling blood, but he takes a giant shot. O’Malley’s head snaps, but he swings and eats another. It’s a great fight!

Yan eats a head kick and shoots! Although he seems fine, he may have been rocked. Yan gets O’Malley to the fence though and he locks his hands and scores the takedown. Yan is extremely tired but still holds the top spot. O’Malley fishing for a kimura and it gets him to his feet but Yan staying on him, holding the back and O’Malley looks a wee bit tired. Understandable.

O’Malley breaks and with 90 seconds left he’s coming forward with punches. Yan is swinging enormous counters and lands a huge one but O’Malley’s chin is up to the test. Yan is given a body lock. O’Malley gramby rolls out of it and we’ve got 30 seconds left and we’re in space.

The cut on Yan’s eye is causing him to bleed like a stuck pork. O’Malley intervenes and throws O’Malley off with a trip. Yan quickly unloads the ground and continues to pound till the last horn. It was a great fight.
