Former contender for the UFC middleweight title, Paulo Costa, who failed to agree on the signing of a new contract by the strongest league in the world, believes that the organization deliberately underestimates the fees to Brazilian fighters.
“I think they initially offer the Brazilians smaller amounts,” Costa said in the latest episode of the MMA Hour. “Maybe they just think, ‘They live in the jungle and don’t need real money because their currency is five times less than a dollar’, but that’s very bad for business. I don’t care who I fight, but if it doesn’t pay enough, I have to fix it.”
Costa, who turned down a fight against Robert Whittaker at UFC 284 in Perth, said his standard fee is $70,000 plus the same for the win, and he was offered the same amount to fight Whittaker.
As for the new contract, the Brazilian was offered $500,000 for six fights. He turned down the offer, stating that he wanted to negotiate each fight separately, instead of entering into a long-term agreement.
At the moment, Paulo Costa has one fight left under his current deal with the organization, after which he will be able to test the market as a free agent.
