O’Malley explained why Sterling won’t move up to welterweight

Current UFC flyweight titleholder, Sean O’Malley, doesn’t believe that former division champion, Aljamain Sterling, will actually decide to try his hand at the featherweight division.

“I like Aljoe, he’s a good dude, and I’ve never said anything bad about him,” O’Malley said on another edition of The MMA Hour program. “If he moves up to welterweight, it’s going to be interesting – there are a lot of exciting fights for him in that division. How about Aljo against Brian Ortega? That’s a great fight.”

“His skills and size are enough for this weight class, but I think he’ll stay at flyweight simply because he’s insecure and needs to be bigger and stronger than his opponents. If he believed in his strength, he could prove himself in the welterweight division”

Two weeks ago, Aljamain Sterling said that the organization’s matchmakers offered him a fight with the number seven ranked welterweight, Kelvin Kattar, but made it clear that he has not yet decided in which division he will continue his professional career.

In August of this year, Aljamain Sterling lost the UFC flyweight championship belt to Sean O’Malley by technical knockout in the second round.
