Briton of Nigerian origin heavyweight Anthony Joshua (24-3, 22 KOs) has changed coaches twice in a row after losing to Ukrainian Oleksandr Usyk. First, he left compatriot Rob McCracken (with whom he collaborated as an amateur) for American Robert Garcia, and now he is looking for a new mentor in the United States.
British Olympic medalist David Price suggests that Joshua
looking for coach in the wrong place: “I think he should remember his roots. In my opinion, there are specialists in Britain who would do a better job than all these eminent mentors. I will even tell you the name of a coach who would fit Joshua very well. You may think that this sounds ridiculous, because they have known each other since Anthony was a small child. The man’s name is Don Charles.”
Charles is best known for his work with Derek Chisora. The British specialist also has Nigerian roots. Price “will bet that Don will do a great job with Joshua. I’m really sure of it. But the trouble is that Charles is not the “glamorous” name that Anthony is looking for. This is not a name that will excite boxing fans. I just think that in Joshua’s case, it’s much better to “stay at your doorstep” rather than look far away. But it’s not for me to decide, but for him. He will make whatever decision he wants.”
The other day, a top British coach spoke about the same thing – he walked very hard on Anthony Joshua. Interestingly, Garcia suggests that he may continue to work with Joshua.
