Legendary boxer and successful promoter Floyd Mayweather (Mayweather Promotions) was once again forced to answer an uncomfortable question about his only superstar – the WBA World lightweight champion American puncher Gervonta “Tank” Davis (27-0, 25 KOs).
Fans and experts are not happy with the level of opposition “Tank” and Mayweather’s unwillingness to arrange really dangerous fights for him. At the same time, Davis is the only one in the division and one of the few active PPV-level boxers in boxing.
Mayweather was asked why not make “Tank” fights with compatriots Devin Haney (28-0, 15 KOs) and Shakur Stevenson (18-0, 9 KOs). The first is the absolute champion of the division, and the second is the conqueror of two categories, the owner of two titles in 59 kg.
Mayweather obviously didn’t like the question.: “Look, Shakur is a hell of a fighter and Devin is a hell of a fighter too. If both of these fighters are under contract with Top Rank, then why not bring them together in a full-time fight? I think they just have to fight each other. And don’t worry about the “Tank” … “
Haney was asked to comment on Mayweather’s words. Since he is on friendly terms with him, Devin tried not to escalate: “I agree that the fight between me and Shakur is a potentially huge event that will take place sooner or later. But we all understand one simple truth. It is first and foremost a business. Shakur and I get along very well, we are buddies with him in life, we constantly communicate. But when the time comes, then the time comes. But this fight has to mature, it has to be one that makes sense for both of us. And when that time comes, we will put on a great fight and amuse the fans.”
Devin went on to discuss P4P rating: “I think it should be in the top ten. Let’s be logical. It is generally accepted that light weight is the coolest in boxing. I understand that before it was not clear who was in charge here. There were the so-called “four kings” (Haney, Ryan Garcia, Teofimo Lopez and Gervonta Davis). But now there is only one king. I understand that a lot of people don’t like it. But this is a fact. Whatever it is, I’m going to beat anyone who is put in front of me. Don’t want to include me in “pound”? OK, no question. In the end, this is just an opinion, it is not the ultimate truth. And who said that “pound” from The Ring something cooler “pounda” by ESPN? It’s just two different opinions.”
Haney deftly put an end to the issue of ratings: “You can compare hundreds or even thousands of “pounds”. They will all be different, because this is primarily a personal opinion. And that’s the difference. Pound and ratings are opinions. How are opinions different from facts? That they can be challenged. What is a fact? It’s that I have all the belts in the division. And that’s the only thing that matters, that’s the only thing that matters. This is the proof.”
Stevenson shared his opinion yesterday that Haney should fight Lomachenko, not Kambosos. And then he even named a favorite. Earlier, Shakur said: “Lomachenko and I should fight.”
