Martinez wants to fight Golovkin: “Either he will kill me, or I will teach him a boxing lesson”

The 47-year-old ex-world middleweight champion (up to 72.6 kg) Argentinean Sergio Martinez (56-3-2, 31 KOs) resumed his career in August 2020 and began to beat the middle peasants with journeymen, not just because of nothing to do.

According to the veteran, in the coming year he would like to fight 40-year-old Kazakhstani Gennady Golovkin (42-2-1, 37 KOs) and try to take away his WBA Super and IBF championship belts.

“If I had a choice, I would go against Golovkin,” Martinez said in an interview with
Izquierdazo. – Someone can tell me that Golovkin will kill me. Yes, I know that he can kill me. Or not. I also know that I can give him a boxing lesson. I’m getting better every day. Not the same as it once was, but much better.”

“In general, I’m aiming for a fight with Golovkin, although my manager may be looking to make a fight with (WBA World Champion) Erislandy Lara,” said the Argentinean. “It’s just that I know that fighting Lara can be terribly boring. Lara will sit on her bike and dance around you without stopping, and in the end it will be a terrible sight. But with Golovkin it would be a nice fight to watch, even if he tore me to the Argentine flag.

“I know this is complete madness, but I believe in myself and that I can throw an incredible fight against Golovkin,” Sergio persists. “And I have to fight at a high level, otherwise he will finish me.” Golovkin is going to be a great clash of styles, I think we can give a great fight.”

Martinez urged not to pay attention to age:

“Well, yes, I am eight years older than Lara and almost the same age as Golovkin. But when a champion fights a champion or a mandatory challenger, it’s the brain that makes the difference, not the age. And not physical readiness, because we are all in great shape. The winner will be the one who has the best tactics and strategy, and who has the best rest in the last week before entering the ring.

Sergio also added that he has set a deadline for his title fight to be March 2024.

Martins had two bouts this year, beating Macaulay McGowan in January and Noah Kidd in December.
