World Boxing Council President Mauricio Suleiman believes that “it would be fair” to give former three-division champion Vasily Lomachenko (16-2, 11 KOs) a chance to fight for the WBC lightweight title (up to 61.2 kg).

On October 29, he will return to the ring in a duel with the unbeaten Jemaine Ortiz (16-0-1, 8 KOs).

Suleiman would like Lomachenko to then get the opportunity to fight for the WBC, WBA, WBO, IBF titles held by Devin Haney (28-0, 15 KOs). The latter will have a rematch on October 15 with former champion George Kambosos (20-1, 10 KOs).

“That would be fair,” said Suleiman
Sky Sports and added that Lomachenko “went through a lot, like Usyk: returned to Ukraine, supported his country, and now he left to train and is going to fight in October.”

“It will be very, very easy for him to get the opportunity to fight for the championship. Lomachenko is one of the best fighters in the world, ”the head of the WBC admired.

At the same time, he noted that Haney’s talent and boxing abilities should not be underestimated.

“He is an outstanding champion, I am so happy for Devin and the way he proved to the world that he did everything right despite so many criticisms of himself and the WBC,” Suleiman said. “Haney is an amazing fighter, one of the best in the world without a doubt.”

Lomachenko held his last fight in December 2021, defeating Richard Commey on points.
