If Conor McGregor plans to claim the UFC welterweight title, he needs to get a spectacular victory in this weight class first, according to reigning division champion Leon Edwards.
“If Conor comes back and wins well at welterweight, then I would more than welcome this fight,” the Briton told talkSPORT. “It will be a huge fight not only for Europe, but for the whole world. Let him come back, win the welterweight division, and then we will discuss it.
For a hypothetical fight with the Irishman to become a reality, Edwards must successfully defend the title in a rematch with Kamaru Usman, who will headline UFC 286 in London on March 18.
“It’s amazing. It’s a childhood dream of any MMA fighter to headline a hometown show, especially as a champion. This is a great opportunity and I’m excited.”
According to the Briton, he is not at all embarrassed by the fact that he is not the favorite in the upcoming fight.
“I’ve been an underdog in a lot of fights but haven’t lost a single fight in the last seven years, so it doesn’t bother me. I’m just focused on what I need to do – prepare for the fight and perform.”
The day before, Conor McGregor’s trainer, John Kavanagh, listed potential rivals for his ward, without mentioning Leon Edwards.
