Khamzat Chimaev (11-0) made his much-anticipated return to the Octagon against Gilbert Burns (20-5) at the VyStar Veterans Memorial Arena in Jacksonville, Fla. It was a non-title fight.

Round 1

Both men come out in orthodox and it’s Burns on his bike to start. Chimaev then throws Burns two teeps and shoots a second. Burns recovers his hips but Chimaev presses him against the fence. He then lands some knees to possibly the cup.

Burns still fighting this takedown off but not close to separation and Chimaev is able to get him down. Burns is still up against his cage, trying to get away but Chimaev keeps his eyes on Burns and lands a few shots. Burns is pulled back up by Chimaev, who then takes Burns’ back. They are now in space when Chimaev takes off.

Chimaev is HUGE in there but Burns has the speed and he’s landing some decent kicks against Chimaev. Burns is a little confused when Chimaev hits a righthand that catches Burns, but they are now striking. Burns even getting the jab going and he seems to have some timing down. Chimaev isn’t looking to wrestle right now. He seems happy to land shots and strike.

This is a good scrap site with Burns pushing the button on him. That speed is helpful for Burns but now Chimaev is on the march and Burns is getting back up too much. Chimaev winging shots and he wants a KO now. He’s leaving his chin there but he doesn’t seem to mind, until Burns stumbles him. He’s now free to do what he wants.

With a minute left, Chimaev drops Burns with a jab! Burns stepped in and Chimaev caught him on the chin and now Burns is on his back and Chimaev with hammer fists. Burns is a shrewd man, but Chimaev continues to hit him. Burns recovers, and Chimaev counters. Burns is busted open but he hits Chimaev with a jab and a right hand of his own! This is a damn good scrap.

Round 2

Very fun first round there and we learned a lot about Chimaev in it.

Chimaev lands a low kick to start and he has a pretty good kicking game. Burns, however, shoots a double-leg on him and nearly gets it! Chimaev runs out of the ball, but it was unanticipated.

Chimaev is now switching stances quite a bit and getting his jab. Burns tags him over it with a counter and big kicks. Chimaev’s jab is a good weapon right now though, and he uses it to draw out a counter and crack Burns back.

Chimaev seems content with a kickboxing fight now, and Burns takes on another one-leg bout. But Chimaev’s too strong and large for that. Chimaev comes in wildly and Chimaev gets clipped with a left hook that drops him! Burns trying to finish a hurt Chimaev but Chimaev firing back! Burns scores another major left, but Chimaev is now fully recovered.

Burns looking a bit winded now but Chimaev has definitely slowed and this is getting very interesting. Burns feels a bit beaten up by Chimaev’s big right hand! Burns is now throwing everything into his counters and he’s landing but he can’t put Chimaev down. Burns shoots a takedown but Chimaev sprawls it out and he’s on top. Burns takes over and gets back to swinging. Burns is taking over with volume on the feet and he’s got Chimaev reacting to feints. He’s putting in a great performance.

Chimaev, landing some counters on his own but Burns landing even more. He’s also ripping at the body well. Chimaev is now causing Burns to brawl in the phone booth. He steps in, and Chimaev is dropped! No time left and Burns almost lands a soccer kick! Chimaev performing a takedown. Then, something happened at the end and there’s quite a bit of a row.

Round 3

This is Fight of the Night. No question.

The pace at which the third round is being started was slower than it should have been. Both men must be gassed. Chimaev still marching forward but nary a takedown attempt. He does land a big right though that has Burns moving back.

Chimaev is back with the jab, and he has a lot success supporting Burns. Burns goes for a takedown but Chimaev isn’t having it. Burns staying dogged but Chimaev is a superb wrestler and so strong. Burns looking gassed now though. He’s against the fence and Chimaev is unloading shots! Burns in the cover up and Chimaev going for knees! Burns is EXHAUSTED but Chimave clinches.

They break, and Chimaev gives a huge jab to Burns. Burns is very reclusive, with Chimaev popping and jabbing him. Burns is winging counters. Chimaev is now using an uppercut to cut Burns’ guard, but Burns fights back. His face is a bloody mask now though.

Burns presses the action and land some rights of his own. Chimaev is back, though. Both men clearly tired but Burns has gathered some wind. With a minute left, Chimaev is stalking but he’s throwing less now and Burns i trying to land. Big shots from Burns that miss. Chimaev swaying and ducking. Burns fighting for his life.

Chimaev is still pressing Burns and he’s not giving up. Chimaev ends the fight with a takedown attempt that he can’t finish and that’s a TREMENDOUS fight.
