Kamaru Usman challenged Khamzat Chimaev

Former UFC welterweight champion, Kamaru Usman, is willing to stick around in the middleweight division for a rematch with Khamzat Chimaev, to whom he lost by majority judge’s vote at the end of three rounds last October, taking the fight on short notice.

“If they organize a fight between Adesanya and Du Plessis, it makes sense,” MMAJunkie quoted the Nigerian as saying. “Whoever wants to see that fight? Chimaev wants to be a champion-level fighter, so why don’t we have a five-round rematch? Everybody wants to see it, but a lot will depend on what they decide with the championship fight.”

If Chimaev gets a title shot, or a contender fight with Israel Adesanya, Usman will focus on regaining his welterweight championship belt.

“I wouldn’t mind going back to welterweight and getting the belt back. I think I’m one fight away from that, so we’ll see how things develop. Right now I’m relaxing and watching what happens and letting my body heal.”

Earlier, UFC head man Dana White denied rumors that a fight between Hamzat Chimaev and Israel Adesanya would headline the organization’s debut event in Saudi Arabia, which takes place on June 22 in Riyadh. Meanwhile, Adesanya claims that the league tried to arrange a fight for him against the division’s current champion, Dricus Du Plessis, however, the South African refused to fight him at UFC 300 in Las Vegas, citing injury.
