Current UFC heavyweight titleholder Jon Jones, who is recovering from surgery, has responded to interim division champion, Tom Aspinall, who demanded that his belt be stripped from him.
“For 15 years now I have faced the toughest competition this world has to offer,” the American wrote on social media. “During training camp for a title defense I suffered a serious injury that required surgery for the first time in my career.”
“Now all sorts of rookies are demanding to strip me of my title. Zero wins over legends, zero title defenses, and they already think they can demand something from Dana – it’s funny. In my 15-year career, I’ve seen a lot of guys who should have been great, but there was always only one Jon Jones – don’t forget that”
In March of this year, Jon Jones resumed his career after a three-year hiatus and won the vacant UFC heavyweight championship belt by finishing Cyril Gagne with a guillotine choke in two minutes.
He was scheduled to make a title defense against former division champion Stipe Miocic on November 11 at UFC 295 in New York City, but tore a pectoral muscle two weeks before the event and pulled out of the bout.
As a result, the management of the world’s strongest league decided to play out an interim title, the owner of which became the British Tom Aspinall, who knocked out Russian Sergey Pavlovich in 69 seconds.
