Reigning UFC heavyweight champion Jon Jones responded to the words of Islam Makhachev, who said that the American does not deserve the first place in the ranking of the best fighters of the organization regardless of weight category.
“I want to encourage young fighters to break at least some of my records instead of using their mouth – now that would be gangster style,” the American wrote on social media. “As for the fight between Islam and Alex, may the best man win. Islam has made some negative comments but I don’t have to respond with negativity. I have bigger fish to fry right now. And I wish Islam all the best!”
Islam Makhachev will make his UFC lightweight title defense against Alexander Volkanovski on Oct. 21 at UFC 294 in Abu Dhabi, while Jon Jones will put his title on the line against Stipe Miocic on Nov. 11 at UFC 295 in New York.
Alex Volkanovski and Islam Makhachev are currently ranked second and third in the UFC’s P4P rankings, respectively.
