Current UFC heavyweight titleholder Jon Jones continues to respond to Tom Aspinall’s challenges with enviable consistency, while trying to convince fans that his fight with Stipe Miocic is more relevant than a unification bout with the division’s interim champion.
“John, you are not in control of your ego,” the Brit wrote on social media. “I’m not belittling your resume, it’s incredible and far superior to mine. You are known as the best fighter of all time and that’s why I want to beat you. I’m sure you’re in a position to realize that.”
“Tom, you’re talking about other people’s egos and that’s one of the most hypocritical things in the world,” the American replied. “You literally haven’t taken my balls out of your mouth since you won an imaginary championship belt. You and Sergey had zero championship titles under your belt. It’s funny how you walk around now feeling like a world champion. Especially when the real champion is undefeated and showed a flawless last performance. I didn’t get hit once in my last fight.”
“My fight with Stipe was scheduled long before yours and you weren’t even the backup fighter,” Jones continued. “Trust me, you’re the one walking around with an inflated ego and claims. That intern championship means absolutely nothing if you really haven’t noticed. Your fight at Madison Square Garden left fans confused. It’s good that the UFC and time-tested champions are on the same page. The UFC, Stipe and I have unfinished business, it’s very simple. I want to see Stipe on my resume – I don’t need anything else from the sport. I came, I saw, I won. Facts.”
One fan asked if this means the fight with Miocic will be the last fight of his career.
“I didn’t say that,” the UFC champion clarified. “All I’m saying is that I’m coming back from two surgeries, and beating Stipe is my main goal, and a big accomplishment in my opinion. We both signed huge contracts and a win for either of us would go a long way in our legacy. No matter how good Tom looks right now, a win over him will have no impact on my legacy. That’s all I’m saying.”
Jon Jones was scheduled to make his title defense against Stipe Miocic on Nov. 11 at UFC 295 in New York, but he tore a pectoral muscle two weeks before the event and had to undergo surgery, and the organization awarded the interim title to Britain’s Tom Aspinall, who knocked out Russian Sergey Pavlovic in 69 seconds.
UFC head Dana White made it clear that the American will retain the title and hold a postponed fight against his compatriot as soon as he can return to the octagon, while Aspinall will defend the interim belt against one of the top fighters in the division.
