John McCarthy Thinks Aldo Will Beat Sterling But Not Petr Yan

Legendary referee John McCarthy is confident that Brazilian Jose Aldo will be able to defeat the reigning UFC bantamweight champion American Aljamain Sterling, but not Russian Petr Yan, who currently owns the interim champion belt.

“Jose Aldo is fighting at such a high level right now that you’re asking yourself, ‘Can he beat Aljamain Sterling?’ Yes, to be honest, he will win, but I’m not sure that he can beat Petr Yan. But if you look at who Aldo fought and beat and how fantastic he looked in fights with the best of the best, you understand that he can beat Sterling, ”McCarthy said on the Weighing In podcast.

In his last fight, which took place on the night of December 5 at UFC on ESPN 31 in Las Vegas, Aldo defeated Rob Font by unanimous decision. In total, 35-year-old Aldo has 31 wins and 7 losses.

In July 2020, at UFC 251 in Abu Dhabi, Aldo fought for the vacant bantamweight belt against Petr Yan, losing to the Russian by technical knockout in the fifth round.
