UFC 271 tournament bout
The fight will take place on February 13 in Houston (Texas, USA) at the Toyota Center arena and will be the third most important fight at the UFC 271 PPV tournament. The estimated start of the fight is 06:00 Kyiv time. The fight will be broadcast live on Setanta Sports.
Two top middleweights will fight in the cage – No. 3 Jared Cannonier (14-5) and No. 4 Derek Brunson (23-7).
Cannonier returned in August after losing to Robert Whittaker, defeating Kelvin Gastelum in a five-round unanimous decision. The victory was for “Killa Gorilla” the fourth in the last five fights.
Brunson lost both of his fights by knockout in 2018 – Ronaldo Souza and future UFC champion Israel Adesanya. And since then, Derek has only been winning. He’s on a five-fight streak, last year Brunson passed Kevin Holland’s points and Darren Till’s 3rd round submission in his third straight main event in the UFC.
Prediction for the fight
Cannonier has an advantage on paper over his opponent in the standing position, but Brunson’s punching technique is often underestimated. Both fighters can win by knockout, but Kannonier looks more intimidating in this regard.
Cannonier, due to his superiority in the stance and poor defense of the opponent, has good chances to win by knockout or take the victory on points. But at the same time, Brunson is a great fighter and his takedowns can be a huge problem for Jared. The fighters are about evenly matched to win, but we favor a well-rounded Brunson who can take the enemy’s attacks and then use his takedowns and grappling.
