UFC Fight Night: Blachowicz vs. Rakic took place May 14 at the UFC APEX in Las Vegas, Nevada. Former UFC light heavyweight champion Jan Blachowicz (29-9) took on top contender Aleksandar Rakic (14-3) in the night’s main event. The fight aired live on ESPN 2 and ESPN+.

Round 1: Bruce Buffer gets everyone fired up, and the two men face off — although much further apart compared to Friday’s staredown. Both fighters exchange leg kicks and touch hands. Slip from Rakic and Blachowicz throws a huge head kick that comes up short. Blachowicz already sporting a cut on his left eye less than a minute in. Blachowicz continues to get leg kicks from Rakic. He then glances at Rakic with his right hand, and scores with a strong kick to the abdomen. Rakic with a right hand to the chest, the former champ answers with a body shot of his own. The jab of Rakic is starting to score early and often. This is a case where neither man has taken a step back. Rakic is stung by Blachowicz’s left hook. He quickly recovers and throws an overhand right. Rakic is switching stances after some heavy leg kicks from Blachowicz. Blachowicz defends Rakic, while Rakic fires. Blachowicz wins the land, but Rakic is still in control. Final 30 seconds and Rakic’s leg is welted up. Round concluded with one more leg kick and Blachowicz’s combination.

Round 2: Nasty cut on that eye of Blachowicz, the doctor clears him and off we go. Rakic grabs a single and gets a takedown. Blachowicz is able to grab the right leg above Rakic’s head, perhaps looking for a triangle. It’s secured in. Rakic escapes, they scramble, and Rakic ends up on top in full guard. Rakic attempting to do some damage but Blachowicz does a great job of keeping it close and protecting. Rakic sneaks an elbow in as Blachowicz isn’t in much of a hurry to improve his position with two minutes left. Blachowicz turns his back towards the fence, trying to get up. Rakic stops him. Short left hands from Rakic who continues to maintain control. The round is in its final minute and there are not many changes to the position. Rakic scores a pair short uppercuts and Blachowicz gets up just as the horn sounds.

MMAFighting scores it 10-9 for Rakic, 19-19 overall.

Round 3: Blachowicz smiling as Mark Smith gets them ready to go, and we’re off. This is the combination that Blachowicz comes up with. Jab from Rakic almost knocks the mouthpiece out of Blachowicz, ref stops quick. Blachowicz continues to fight, landing a leg kick. Rakic steps back as his knees give out and he plants. Blachowicz moves in, but Mark Smith waves it off. A disappointing end to an exciting fight.
