Islam Makhachev’s team made a statement about the next fight

Reigning UFC welterweight champion Leon Edwards will likely not be the next opponent for Islam Makhachev, who holds the UFC lightweight title.

In an interview with the publication TASS reported the Russian’s manager, Rizvan Magomedov.

“It looks like the UFC has other plans for Leon Edwards,” Magomedov said. “But if he has time to recover and they put him on the bill, we’re ready. If not him, then Charles Oliveira or Justin Gaethje. I would be more interested in having a fight against Gaethje.”

As for timing, the organization’s best fighter regardless of weight class plans to make a title defense before Ramadan.

“We’re aiming for March 9. But for now, we’re waiting to see if the UFC can come to an agreement with any of the opponents. If it doesn’t, then there will be other dates.”

As a reminder, UFC 299 will take place on March 9 in Miami, with the main event currently set to be a featherweight title fight between Sean O’Malley and Marlon Vera.
