On the eve of the superfight against Alexander Volkanovski, Islam Makhachev received a prestigious award from the UFC, becoming the owner of the Submission of the Year award for an early victory over Charles Oliveira.
“Submission of the Year,” said the UFC lightweight champion as he accepted the award. “When I caught Charles Oliveira and closed the lock, I thought he would surrender. I finished off the most dangerous guy on the ground – I knew my skills and told the press, everyone around me that I was going to strangle him. I know that I deserve this award. Thank you”
The fight for the vacant UFC lightweight championship belt between Islam Makhachev and Charles Oliveira, who headlined UFC 280 in Abu Dhabi last October, ended with the Russian’s victory by arm triangle choke in the second round.
Makhachev will make his first title defense on February 11 at UFC 284 in Las Vegas against Alexander Volkanovski, who will put the title of the best UFC fighter regardless of weight at stake.
