Reigning UFC lightweight champion and the organization’s best fighter regardless of weight class, Islam Makhachev, addressed the participants of the featherweight title fight, Alexander Volkanovski and Elijah Topuria, whose confrontation ended in an early defeat for the Australian.
“Alex is undoubtedly one of the greatest champions in the welterweight division,” the Russian wrote on social media. “Keep your head up and come back stronger!”
“Congratulations to the new champion Topuria. Good job, bijo!”
The featherweight title fight between Alex Volkanovski and Elijah Topuria headlining UFC 298 in Anaheim ended at the 3:32 mark of the second round with a knockout victory for the Spanish-Georgian fighter.
Volkanovski returned to the octagon less than four months after his rematch with Makhachev, in which the Australian suffered a first-round knockout loss.
