Islam Makhachev is ready to hold one more fight before the end of the year

The fight with Alexander Volkanovski may not be the last fight of the year for Islam Makhachev.

According to the current UFC lightweight titleholder, he plans to challenge the winner of the welterweight championship fight between Leon Edwards and Colby Covington, and is even ready to insure the fight.

“I’m ready to fight anyone – whether it’s Leon or Colby. My dream is a second championship belt,” the Russian said at a press conference in Abu Dhabi. “We have a lot of UFC champions, but not too many double champions, and I want to be one of them.”

“I will be at this fight and if the UFC offers me to insure it, we will consider it. Why not? I won’t have to race a lot, I’ll be in good shape – I just need to maintain it and that’s it”

While Makhachev makes the foray into the welterweight division, he suggests a contender’s bout between Justin Gaethje and Charles Oliveira.

“After the fight with Volkanovski, I have two opponents waiting for their title shot. I think they should be put together so there’s one real contender.”

The fight between Islam Makhachev and Alex Volkanovski will headline this weekend’s UFC 294 event in Abu Dhabi, while Leon Edwards and Colby Covington will headline UFC 296 on December 16 in Las Vegas.
