The legendary Bernard Hopkins commented on the words of the ex-opponent in the boxing ring and colleague in Golden Boy Promotions Oscar De La Hoya, who recently announced that negotiations on organizing a fight between popular American lightweights Ryan Garcia (23-0, 19 KOs) and Gervonta Davis (27-0, 25 KOs) have finally reached a dead end.
Hopkins delivers classically beautiful speeches at times. This time
he again performed strongly: “You know what? I will be very disappointed if, after 5 months, you ask me the same question, and I still have no specifics to answer you. Do you know what’s important? Don’t play blame. Don’t have one side publicly blame the other side for the breakdown in negotiations. You need to do everything right: negotiate, as befits two cool promotional companies. Do not run to media representatives, do not ask them to judge us, to decide who is right and who is to blame. We’re doing business here. And business should be above even your own ego.
According to Hopkins, “Oscar is still trying to do everything in his power to make this fight happen. But something more is needed. Both sides must speak with their champions first. Fighters have to make it clear to everyone that they want this fight. Fighters need to be heard, they need to speak louder than their promoters. After all, it is possible that the problem is not in the promoters, but in the fighters. What if one of them doesn’t really want this fight? Is he too risky for his career? Therefore, first you need to figure it out within the team – do both of them want this fight equally?
Hopkins also spoke of athletic greatness: “Achievement? As long as your career goes on, there’s a lot of talk about what you can do or want to do. The main thing is not to miss your opportunities, carried away by empty talk.
In the meantime, it became known that Garcia will fight for the title in the next fight, but he will not fight with Haney and not with Davis. The other day, De La Hoya’s challenge was accepted by Teofimo Lopez. But not in the way you imagined it.
