Highlights of Alexander Volkanovski’s fight against Korean Zombie

Alexander Volkanovski (24-1) looked to make the third defense of his UFC featherweight title against “The Korean Zombie” Chan Sung Jung (17-7) at the VyStar Veterans Memorial Arena in Jacksonville, Fla. The fight aired live on ESPN+ pay-per-view.

Round 1: Both men come out in orthodox and it’s Zombie who takes the center of the cage. Lots of feeling out early in this one. First connection is a counter left as Zombie tried to land a jab.

Zombie starting to cut the cage now but when he steps in, Volkanovski lands a big counter hook. He looks dialed in to start. He is patient Zombie, and Volkanovski getting his jab started.

Zombie throwing very little, but when he does, Volkanovski is back with counters, and in between, Volkanovski is landing the jab. Volkanovski scores a huge shot, and Zombie is back. He’s not finding the mark though and Volkanovski is TAGGING him. The champ is mixing his attacks well and he’s got Zombie’s face swelling already.

Zombie comes in and eats a hard one two that may have wobbled him. Volkanovski is noticeably slower and it’s a price he has to pay. Volkanovski draws him in, then tunes him up. Through four minutes, this is a master class.

A clinch occurs and Volkanovski puts Zombie in the cage. Volkanovski then gets a quick takedown. Zombie is three steps behind, but he gets up. Dean Thomas observes that Zombie appears to be ready for leg kicks, but Volkanovski doesn’t throw them. Volkanovski then lands two strong kicks that knock his feet out. He was a complete shutout there.

Round 2: Zombie needs to get things going because he was styled on in that round. Zombie might have scored a few strikes but he also ate quite a lot.

Zombie starts with a kick in the calf. It landed well. That is a good weapon. Volkanovski is now back firing with his own kicks. An exchange and this time Zombie lands. Starting to find the range. He returns to find the range, but Volkanovski land a massive hook that catches Zombie.

Zombie is struggling to balance speed and class. He’s behind the pace and Volkanovski is mixing things so well that Zombie doesn’t know how to react. However, he does manage to land solid right hands and a front kick. He is now settling down but still eats shots.

Volkanovski lands a massive 1-2 that buckles Zombie’s knee! This was an enormous shot, and Zombie is now in serious trouble. Zombie swings a massive haymaker, which causes Volkanovski back and forces him to shoot a double leg instead. Volkanovski on top but Zombie back to the fence and looking to get up. Zombie takes a few photos while it’s happening though. And when he gets up he looks TIRED.

Volkanovski slaps him back, though, and shoots to the hips once more. He strikes an uppercut, and then a hook. Volkanovski can do everything Zombie cannot. Volkanovski takes a little trip inside Zombie’s head. Zombie retorts though. He’s so damn tough.

Volkanovski is putting in the work now that Zombie pushes ahead. Volkanovski firing on all cylinders.

Round 3: Zombie’s corner telling him he needs to take risks now. Although it’s possible that’s true, it could also mean that he is sent out with his shield. Right now, he’s being washed.

Volkanovski is still dialed-in to begin the third. But, he brawls a little and Zombie scores a great left hook. Volkanovski putting everything behind a feint and that’s magic. Zombie says, “Stop it!” and then lands an impressive uppercut. He just keeps marching ahead. Volkanovski is backing up for a reset.

Zombie taking the uppercut more, Volkanovski responding with his knees. His genius is amazing. Zombie just can’t consistently generate offense. Zombie’s shot is too much for him and he takes a deep dive into a takedown. Zombie is able to resist it for most of the time, and he gets to the fence immediately. Now, Clinch but he can break it and they are back in space.

Volkanovski landing 58% of his strikes which is insane. Zombie tries to stuff the takedown, but he mixes it in. He does eat a shot on the break, and that’s the fight right there. Zombie can keep his wheels turning, but is losing every moment.

Volkanovski is working the jab, but Zombie comes in with a huge combo and Volkanovski has to leave again. Zombie is having his most success when he does gamble big, but there’s not enough of it to succeed. And he steps in on one and eats a huge hook! Volkanovski follows Zombie to the mat after he’s dropped. It’s only a short time before Volkanovski starts dropping shots. The bell saves him.

Round 4: Zombie’s corner should stop this fight. He has no way to win and he’s taking a beating. But they shouldn’t. No need for more of this. It’s just not possible for him to do it tonight. No shame in losing to the best.

The referee calls in the doctor and Zombie says he wants to fight so, since his corner won’t do their jobs and protect their fighter, this bout continues.

Round 4 starts and Volkanovski still tuning him up. Leg, body, head. Volkanovski unleashes a MONSTER right hook that spins Zombie’s head around but he is still on his feet! Wow, Volkanovski has a great chin and Herb Dean grabbes Volkanovski before the latter can follow up. Standing TKO. Dominant.
