Grigory Ponomarev spoke out about Abdulrashid Sadulaev’s defeat

Russian heavyweight Grigory Ponomarev, who is recovering from a knee injury in his ACA Grand Prix quarterfinal bout against Mukhumat Vakhaev, commented on the unexpected defeat of two-time Olympic freestyle wrestling champion Abdulrashid Sadulaev, who was unable to finish his semifinal bout at the World Championships in Belgrade due to a neck injury.

“The Dagestani who injured his neck lost to his injury. The dude who broke his leg during the fight lost to his opponent, but not to his injury. Here and draw conclusions,” Ponomarev said in another video published in his Telegram channel.

Last Monday, 27-year-old Abdulrashid Sadulaev failed to reach the final of the world championship in the 97 kg weight category, refusing to continue his bout with 20-year-old pupil of his school Akhmed Tajudinov, representing Bahrain. At the time the match was stopped, Sadulaev, who had suffered a neck injury, was losing 9-2 to his countryman.

Akhmed Tazhudinov, who had defeated American Kyle Snyder 11-0 in the quarterfinals, finally completed his triumphant march to the World Championships with an early victory over Azerbaijan’s Magomedkhan Magomedov in the final match.
