Last weekend in Las Vegas (USA), Mexican Saul Alvarez (58-2-2, 39 KOs) made his debut defense of the undisputed super middleweight title, defeating Kazakhstani Gennady Golovkin (42-2-1, 37 KOs).

Immediately after the fight, the legendary Kazakhstani recalled that he remains the champion, despite the defeat of his antagonist – the veteran of the belt according to the WBA Super and IBF divisions below.

But now the 40-year-old fighter has a decision to make. Golovkin has 5 days to decide whether he will agree to a mandatory defense of the WBA Super title against the holder of the WBA World belt, 39-year-old Cuban Erislandy Lara (29-3-3, 17 KOs), or refuse the belt.

Golovkin previously announced that the fight with Canelo is the last under the contract with Matchroom Boxing Eddie Hearn and streaming DAZN. Lara performs within Premier Boxing Champions Al Haymon. It is possible that Golovkin will soon join the project – in RVS there is also the WBC champion American Jermall Charlo.

At the post-match press conference, Golovkin said: “The fight was very competitive,” and Canelo is happy that he “killed the best jabber in the world.”

This was the third face-to-face fight between Golovkin and Canelo. In 2017, their first fight ended in a draw, and exactly 12 months later, the Mexican was a little better. Those fights were at middleweight.
