Popular martial arts columnist, boxing coach and former television commentator American Teddy Atlas on the air of the latest edition of the podcast
The Fight with Teddy Atlas commented on the upcoming third fight between the unified middleweight champion (up to 72.6 kg) Kazakhstani Gennady Golovkin (42-1-1, 37 KOs) and the absolute champion of the second middle weight (up to 76.2 kg) Mexican Canelo Alvarez (57-2- 2, 39 KOs), which is scheduled for September 17 in Las Vegas (USA).

A well-known critic mentioned the advanced age of the Kazakhstani champion and told what he needs to do to defeat one of the highest grossing boxers of our time.

— [Атлас] Not many people can beat time. This will probably affect the third fight between Golovkin and Canelo. I have already spoken of the old lion. The old lion here will be Golovkin. Will the old lion have a chance to roar one last time? Here’s what it all boils down to.

– You always said that Golovkin won both fights (with Canelo). In the first fight, he won 100%. It’s hard to find an option for Canelo there. I don’t see a big problem with the result in the second fight…

– But I see.

— I think it could be a draw.

“I think Golovkin won both fights. These were different fights. In the first, Golovkin came out to take him by force. And he did what he always did – pressed, pursued … and won. He was robbed. The way they rob, giving a draw in boxing, which is basically a crime without fingerprints, they use latex gloves. And they declared a draw, because, you see, it was too obvious to declare a victory. That’s how they do it.

  • Canelo risks everything. If he loses to Golovkin, he is unlikely to return – Suleiman

The second fight was different. Golovkin boxed more, used the jab more, but when he needed to, he fought like it was the last time. When the lion had to roar, he did it again, as for the last time. I think he won that fight. But there is no doubt that Canelo is a completely different fighter now. He is now a big and strong guy. Don’t ask me how it happened. I dont know. We talked about this in the past. So now he is a big and strong fighter, and he is now more confident. He matured in this second fight. He wasn’t so sure of himself the first time that he could handle a guy of that level. But the second time he had something to show.

It might be too late. These potential great fights are often staged too late. It might be one of those.

– There should be a good fee for Golovkin to sail into the sunset, regardless of the outcome. He looked a little older in some of his recent performances, but I’m not discounting him. I’m sure Golovkin knows he has to knock Canelo down hard because if he knocks him down every round, Canelo will be lucky to get a split decision in his favor. Golovkin is now sailing into the sunset. It’s pretty obvious. And Canelo is still a money cow. So from a business standpoint, I’m sure everyone understands that the way the business works, it’s best for Canelo to win. It works against Golovkin, but he knows it.

He has a tough job, he knows it. The hard task is not that he has to beat the opponent. He not only needs to beat an opponent who is younger and more confident now, but also stronger and bigger. Once again, their second fight was a trigger. But now he also needs to beat the guys outside the ring – three judges. He needs to beat them. And you know what? In a way, this is sometimes harder than beating a fighter in the ring. So let’s see. Let’s see. Let’s see…
