Glover Teixeira and Jamal Hill to fight for vacant UFC light heavyweight title

After an unsuccessful bid for the vacant UFC Light Heavyweight Championship between Magomed Ankalaev and Jan Blachowicz, the organization will give Glover Teixeira and Jamal Hill the opportunity to compete for the title.

The championship bout will headline UFC 283 on January 21 in Rio de Janeiro.

This was announced at a press conference after the UFC 282 tournament by UFC President Dana White.

“I think the main event was terrible. What to do with the title now? Glover vs. Jamal Hill in Brazil for the vacant title. Here’s what we’ll do. The issue has been resolved,” the head of the organization said.

The light heavyweight title fight between Magomed Ankalaev and Jan Blachowicz went the distance and ended in a highly controversial split decision draw that left the Russian without a championship belt.

43-year-old Glover Teixeira, who lost his title in June this year in a confrontation with Jiri Prochazka, refused to fight Magomed Ankalaev when the champion left the UFC 282 tournament with an injury, and 31-year-old Jamal Hill goes on a series of three early victories and in the next fight he was supposed to fight with Anthony Smith.

Glover Teixeira and Jamal Hill are currently ranked second and seventh in the UFC light heavyweight division, respectively.
