Yesterday, May 23, trainer Gary Russell Sr., the patriarch of one of the most iconic families in US boxing, passed away at the age of 64. This sad news was confirmed in social networks by his pupils-sons, ex-world featherweight champion Gary Russell Jr. and unbeaten prospects – bantamweight contender Gary Antonio Russell and welterweight contender Gary Antoine Russell.

Russell Sr., himself a former boxer, began training his sons after he brought the eldest of his 11 children to the section, writes

In recent years, the father of the family had serious health problems: complications from type 2 diabetes and several small strokes. In December, his left leg was amputated, limiting his ability to coach his sons.

The best of the rest. Expert Bradley went through the divisions

Wheelchair-bound due to the loss of a leg, he was giving instructions from the arena floor when Gary Antoine Russell (15-0, 15 KOs) stopped Viktor Postol in the 10th round of their fight on February 26. And a month earlier, he was ringside when Russell Jr. (31-2, 18 KOs) lost a majority decision to Mark Magsaio (24-0, 16 KOs).

Russell Jr. was the longest-serving champion and was undefeated for 7.5 years before meeting Magsayo. Immediately after the defeat, Russell made a scandalous statement. And in January, Magsayo spoke about a possible revenge.
