Garry’s Ian Machado responded to Colby Covington’s challenge

The UFC’s No. 7 ranked welterweight, Ian Machado Garry, did not ignore a statement from the division’s former interim champion, Colby Covington, who challenged him in an offensive manner by mentioning the Irishman’s wife.

“Colby ‘Chaos’ Covington, you are in no position to tell me what I should do with my life,” Garry said in a video posted on social media. “You’re going to do what you’re told. You put three conditions on me and none of them have anything to do with fighting. They all have to do with my wife. I don’t know who raised you, but women are not property and my wife is certainly not a trophy.”

“You need to focus on me. I’m the only one who’s going to be in the octagon with you. I’m the only one who will punch a hole in your head. So, stop looping and don’t mention Leila’s name. You’re not America’s favorite fighter. You’re the only person in UFC history to lose three world title fights, and you don’t have a single win over a fighter currently in the top 15”

“So Colby, why would I fight you? Only one reason comes to mind. I’m offering you an elimination fight – one of us says, ‘I give up’ at the end, then leaves the gloves in the octagon and retires. I’m going to be the last main in your legacy of failure. I’m going to rid the UFC of Colby Covington and bring mixed martial arts back to greatness.”

Last December, Colby Covington made another unsuccessful attempt to win the UFC welterweight championship belt with a five-round unanimous decision loss to Leon Edwards at UFC 296 in Las Vegas, while undefeated Ian Machado Garry picked up his seventh UFC victory in February with a split decision win over Jeff Neal at UFC 298 in Anaheim.

The American fighter is currently three positions ahead of the Irishman in the rankings, sitting fourth in the division.
