Francis Ngannou to Leave UFC, Jon Jones and Cyril Gun to Headline UFC 285

A heavyweight title fight between Jon Jones and Cyril Gun will be the main event of UFC 285 on March 4 in Las Vegas.

At stake will be the vacant UFC championship belt, vacated by free agent Francis Ngannou.

This was announced at a press conference after the UFC Fight Night 217 tournament by UFC President Dana White.

“We have been negotiating with Francis for more than two years,” the head of the organization said. “We offered him a deal that would have made him the highest paid heavyweight in the history of the company – he would have made more than Brock Lesnar, more than anyone else, and he refused the deal.”

In January last year, Cyril Gan suffered his first loss of his career, losing in a unanimous decision to Francis Ngannou, and in September, the 32-year-old Frenchman returned to winning mainstream, knocking out Tai Tuivasa in the third round.

Currently, Cyril Gan continues to occupy the first line in the UFC heavyweight division.

Jon Jones, 35, has not fought since February 2020, when he successfully defended the UFC Light Heavyweight Championship in a five-round fight with Dominick Reyes.
