The UFC’s No. 5 ranked welterweight, Elijah Topuria, has confirmed information that his fight against the division’s current champion, Aleksander Volkanovski, on Jan. 20 will headline UFC 297 in Toronto.
The challenger made the announcement on a televised show on Spanish television. Topuria said the parties still have some details to settle, but he plans to face the champion in the main event of the numbered Canadian event of the world’s strongest league.
Undefeated Elijah Topuria earned his sixth victory under the UFC banner this June with a unanimous decision win over Josh Emmett, while Alex Volkanovski successfully unified the reigning and interim featherweight titles in July with a third-round technical knockout win over Yair Rodriguez.
Earlier, informed sources reported the organization of a featherweight bout between Russian Movsar Evloyev and Brit Arnold Allen, which is rumored to be the second major event of UFC 297.
