In April 2018, Dustin Poirier defeated Justin Gaethje ahead of schedule, winning the fight by technical knockout in the fourth round. The Diamond last entered the octagon in November last year, finishing with a rear naked choke in the third round of Michael Chandler.

Dustin Poirier and Justin Gaethje currently sit second and third in the UFC lightweight rankings, respectively.

A few days earlier it became known that the current champion of the division, Islam Makhachev, will make his next title defense on October 21 at UFC 294 in Abu Dhabi.
