Dustin Poirier: Fight with Gaethje will be a war - we are in for a head-on collision

Former Interim UFC Lightweight Champion Dustin Poirier has shared his thoughts on his upcoming fight with Justin Gaethje, who will headline UFC 291 in Salt Lake City on July 29.

“If this fight does not excite you, you are not a martial arts fan, because this will be a war,” Poirier said in the next edition of the MMA Hour program. “I know what’s in store for me – it’s going to be a head-on collision and I’m not going to dodge it. This is what I want and look forward to. It motivates and excites me.”

While this rematch motivates him on its own, the American admits that the BMF title makes it all the more exciting.

“This fight could head the show without a BMF title because it’s an exciting fight, but the belt will give it even more interest. If this belt is on my waist in July, I’m not going to pretend that I am the undisputed champion, but it will be cool. I’d love to see it on my trophy wall. I am very motivated because this is a fight that cements my legacy.”

Brilliant also answered the question of whether he plans, if he wins, to beat the winner of the fight between Charles Oliveira and Benil Dariush, who will share the octagon on June 10 at UFC 289 in Vancouver, in the Candidates race.

“If Benil Dariush comes out and wins, we can’t say no to his title shot, right? On the other hand, it’s a fighting business, which is unfair, so we’ll just fight and then we’ll see how it goes.”
