Daniel Cormier on the new division in the UFC: “McGregor should fight for the title”

Former UFC double champion, Daniel Cormier, commented on rumors that the world’s strongest league is going to shut down the welterweight division, replacing it with the under 74.8kg (165lbs) and 79.4kg (175lbs) divisions.

“If the under 165lbs division does get introduced, Conor McGregor should fight for the title,” the American said in a video posted on his Youtube channel. “If you’re playing for a new title, it has to mean something. You can’t let two average fighters do it.”

“I just don’t think you should do it at the moment. You can’t set it up now because everyone will think you did it specifically for Conor McGregor.”

According to rumors circulating online, UFC management is willing to take this step because the organization still doesn’t have a main event for the UFC 300 anniversary event, which takes place April 13 in Las Vegas. The Irishman’s opponent is Nate Diaz, who recently hinted at his return to the UFC.
