Dana White is proud of Islam Makhachev

While many are celebrating the bravery of Alex Volkanovski in agreeing to replace the injured Charles Oliveira in his bout with Islam Makhachev, UFC head honcho Dana White is giving credit to the reigning UFC lightweight champion for taking the fight with the Australian on short notice.

“Islam prepared for one opponent, but accepted a fight with another,” the organization’s leader told The Pat McAfee Show. “I’m going to read you a quote from Islam to give you an idea of what this is about. He’s offered a fight with Wolf on short notice and he says, ‘What does this title represent? It means you’re the best in the world, and if you’re the best in the world, it doesn’t matter who they put up against you.’ What am I supposed to say? No? Never! Let’s do it!’ I love it! The guy’s a real flint, and that’s a reason for me to be proud of my fighters.”

Two days earlier, the head of the world’s strongest league officially announced that Charles Oliveira had suffered a serious cut and dropped out of the lineup for UFC 294, and his place on the card will be taken by Alex Volkanovski, who will make his second attempt to take the lightweight championship belt from Islam Makhachev.

Recall that the UFC 294 tournament, the main event of which will be a title superfight in the lightweight category, will be held on October 21 in Abu Dhabi.
