Cyril Gun explained his refusal to fight Tom Aspinall

Former UFC interim heavyweight champion Cyril Gan, who ousted Sergey Spivak from the top spot in the rankings thanks to his win over Sergey Pavlovic, explained why he doesn’t want to fight Tom Aspinall, ranked fourth in the division.

“I know a lot of people are talking about Aspinall, but it doesn’t make sense to me,” the Frenchman said on another edition of The MMA Hour program. “Now I only want to fight for the belt. I’m the number one contender and he’s number four – this fight doesn’t make sense.”

“I just fought someone who is lower and it was a big risk. I don’t want to take any more risks. I expect to fight for a very long time and I’m sure we’ll meet Apinall again, but everything has its time. One day that fight will happen, but right now I only want to fight for the title”

“I’ve been in a rush my whole career. I started MMA in 2018 and had my first fight six months later. From that fight to this day I haven’t stopped, but now I don’t want to rush – this time I need more time to prepare and rest”

Earlier, the head of the world’s strongest league, Dana White, said that the organization of fights between the top fighters of the division is put on pause until the time when the reigning UFC heavyweight champion Jon Jones will make a title defense against Stipe Miocic at UFC 295 in New York.

Regardless of the outcome of the championship bout, both American heavyweights could end their professional careers on that day, leading to the organization of a vacant title fight between top contenders.
